I've always been a great admirer of the toy / lego photography scene. It's possible to tell some really interesting stories by arranging these little guys in 'scenes'. For example, the photograph above is my take on the famous Vietnam war protest image taken by Marc Riboud: https://iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/flower-child-pentagon/ .
Believe it or not, the techniques involved are the same as those in studio portrait photography. For my Lego images I use a Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe softbox (positioned above, to the left and slightly forward of the subject) together with my SB600 speedlight. The black background is made using two pieces of black card. The lens used was my Sigma MACRO 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM. (It’s very sharp and has minimal distortion.)
Composition and posing of the mini figures is extremely important in these types of shots. This shot is made by the eye contact between Maggie and the Stromtrooper.
